Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Casa Building Trips
What is the cost of the trip?
The cost per person is $200. Family discounts are available for 3+ family members ($200/parent, $75/child ages 9-17). These fees cover the cost of transportation, food, supplies, lodging, and building materials. A non-refundable deposit of $50 is due at the time of registration. Your spot is not confirmed until we receive the deposit amount.
Do I need a passport for this trip?
Yes, every participant needs a passport (or passport card) in order to participate. You can check out the policies on the State Department’s website.
What do I pack for this trip?
Work clothes that can get very dirty (long pants and shirts with some kind of sleeve). The communities we will visit have a cultural expectation of modesty. Please wear work clothes, not beach clothes.
Shoes that will both support your feet and be able to get dirty

Cap/hat/visor
Work gloves (optional)
A change of clothes for Saturday evening and Sunday morning
Sleeping bag and pillow (and a camping mat if you prefer)
Toiletries (note you will not be able to shower on Saturday)
Reusable water bottle
Snacks
Camera (optional)
A VALID PASSPORT
What are the sleeping arrangements?
On Friday evening we stay at a home in San Diego, sleeping on beds, couches, mattresses, or the floor. On Saturday evening, we stay in the secure community center of El Florido and sleep on mattresses or the floor in a large classroom with ample space to spread out. Sleeping bags are required, and if you do not have one, please let us know after signing up for the trip and we can bring one for you to borrow. Feel free to bring a camping mat to sleep on if you wish. If you have any back problems or special needs, please let us know before the trip, and we will do our best to accommodate to your needs.
What are the age restrictions for participating in this trip?
We welcome all individuals ages 9+ to participate. Children under 9 may find the heat and physical demands of the weekend too taxing. All minors under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian and the parent/guardian must take full responsibility for their children’s safety. Adults of any age and ability level are welcome to participate.
What if I have family and friends who are not involved in Christus Ministries who want to come on this trip?
We give priority to people involved with Christus Ministries to participate, but we do welcome everyone. Know that the trip will involve Mass, group sharing, and prayer, so participants should be somewhat comfortable with the Catholic expression of Christianity.
What if I have dietary restrictions?
Please let us know about your dietary restrictions in advance and do not let this deter you from signing up! We do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions on a case by case basis and can communicate with you various options.
Are carpools available?
Yes, our registration team will be in touch with you to arrange a carpool. The entire group will caravan to Tijuana together from San Diego.
Can I take part in this “home” building in another way if I cannot attend a weekend trip?
Absolutely! You are invited to do so in three ways:
Pray for everyone involved.
Make a financial contribution toward building a home at $30/square feet.
Invite others to do likewise, as with the St. Thomas Grade School Fundraiser.
