WALK IN THE LIGHT

As we start the Advent season, there is a great anticipation–something in the air changes. For some of us, it’s a transformation of sunshine and falling leaves to snow flurries and icicle-laced windows. For others, it’s extra time off of work or children on break from school. There is an excitement in the air that something is near. At this time of year, however, it’s easy for us to get caught up in the to-do lists: the presents to buy, the plane tickets to book, the final exams to take or the Christmas cards to send out. Whatever your “busyness” is, I encourage you to look at a line in today’s reading from Isaiah chapter 2 which reads, “O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord”. Let us walk in the light of the Lord. This is an invitation for us! An invitation to walk the path to our Christ’s birth. I encourage all of us this Advent to quiet our minds, open our hearts, and journey with Mary and Joseph as they walk towards Bethlehem.

I think about how nervous and uncertain Mary and Joseph must have felt, leaving their home right when they were to have a baby. Oftentimes that’s how many of us feel entering Advent. We may be entering this season with grief, loneliness, sorrow, or uncertainty. But even in darkness, the Lord is our light. As we journey, let’s remember why we celebrate this season: for the anticipated arrival of the Christ child in the manger. Let the Lord be our light as we walk this path together.
