God Is Near

I chose my career in second grade out of an overwhelming desire to become a teacher. I proudly cultivated my path as an educator for twenty years and then chose to leave all that was familiar. It was time to venture on a different journey as priorities shifted.

A friend pointed out this wasn’t the first time she’d seen me embark into the unknown. She was a dear walking companion along The Camino, a pilgrimage route significant to St. Ignatius’ transformation. At that time, I ended a job contract and flew over 4,600 miles to discover something new (although I had no idea what I was looking for).

Jesus speaks about searching for a single stray sheep among a flock of a hundred in today’s Gospel. I felt like a stray when I deserted my fold to leave a job and, eventually, an entire career. But Jesus explains “…it is not the will of your Heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost” (Mt 18:14).

God knew all along that I would drift from my chosen path, but this did not stop Him from making sure I was surrounded by His love. God surrounded me with people and places that were a blend of the known and unknown, and these experiences assured me He was close by.

This is probably not the last time I’ll go astray, but I know God will be with me the next time I do.

God, help me embrace the moments when I feel lost or looking for direction. Let your love assure me you are always near, and open my heart to hear your voice.
