THE ROCK IN OUR HANDS

…"I have shown you many good works from my Father.
For which of these are you trying to stone me?" -John 10:32

Today's Gospel about wanting to stone Jesus for his blasphemy prompts a difficult self-examination. We readily side with Jesus, questioning the crowd's cruelty while envisioning ourselves as receptive to his message, perhaps even victims of similar persecution. Yet, have we looked at our own hands? In moments of challenge, are we not quick to "stone" those closest to us with judgment, resentment, or anger?

My wife's breast cancer diagnosis brought this starkly into focus. My immediate reaction was rage at Jesus, a feeling of profound injustice despite a lifetime of witnessing his good works. I clenched metaphorical rocks, ready to hurl blame.

Today’s Gospel recounts Jesus' escape and return, where many believed in him based on John's truthful words, devoid of miracles. Similarly, accompanying my wife through surgeries and treatments has been a journey of deep dependence on God and the quiet strength of her faith. Through prayer and her unwavering spirit, I too am learning to believe, to unclench my fists and let those stones fall.

What if we could recognize God's consistent presence and good works, even amidst trials? Could we release the burdens of anger and doubt, choosing instead to trust and believe in his unwavering love, allowing him to help us drop the stones we so readily hold?
