CHECKING IN

“For it is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” - Hosea 6:6

Reflecting on today’s reading and Gospel while sheltering at home, I think about how drastically our lives have changed in a matter of days and how the world is changing now due to this pandemic. I realize that most of my time and energy prior to this week were dedicated to work and generally aimed toward some future goals in family, education, and career. In the face of spoiled or delayed plans and an uncertain future, it seems we are now being re-acquainted with the real necessities in life.

Just this week, I have been able to share all three meals in a day with my husband. I have video-chatted with my parents more than I ever have in a week. I caught up with one of my best friends who I haven’t spoken to in a long while. I’ve asked how people are doing, and that question spurred long conversations about how we are doing and feeling. It seems that our prior busy-ness distracted us from even knowing how we are. Have you checked in with how you are really doing today?

Though many of us are in isolation, we are not really alone. We are all connected and in this together. As I read today’s Gospel, I chuckled at the words of the Pharisee, since it was an attitude that has been all too familiar. In the Gospel, the Pharisee said, “Oh God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity.” I have definitely thought that recently as I saw updates about people stocking up on not-so-necessary items. But I am not that different from you, or from the rest of the people around the world. Perhaps now is the time to really check in with each other, to extend love toward one another, and to learn how God’s love can reach across miles and through our quarantined walls.

Oh Lord, help me to love more simply in the present.
