A PRAYER TO BE CAUGHT
Dear Jesus,
Yesterday,
I paused and breathed often,
to be,
to receive.
Today, I heard your invitation,
“Come after me, and I will make you fish for people” (Mt 4:19).
St. Andrew heeded the call, left his nets, and followed you.
Still caught in the nets of my worries and helplessness,
I hesitate to follow in such a decisive, definitive way.
You smiled when I confessed fears of not trusting “enough.”
Your reassuring smile caught my hesitant heart.
I’m drawn by your gentle gaze:
“Tri, I simply ask to let me be with you,
and you with me.”
Really, that’s all you’re asking of me,
to be drawn into a closer friendship with you?
To share my struggles with you and share your struggle in the lives of others?
What about my anxieties, fears, helplessness …?
Breathing again, I return to your gentle smile & steady gaze.
Yes, my dear Jesus, receive first, respond later.
This Advent Season we prepare for your coming.
You always come to us first, loving us first, choosing us first.
We respond to the extent that we let you draw us deeper into your friendship.
Then we cannot but invite others to be “caught up” into greater life with you.
Breathing again,
Amen. Yes, let it be.
