REVELATIONS

I envy Peter and John for knowing Jesus as they did. He was their friend long before they realized who he was. I imagine them spending time with him, sharing meals, laughing, and sharing stories. While their spiritual interests bound them, solid friendship also connected them. They loved him, and, after his death, they gave their lives to sharing what they learned from him.

Jesus and the disciples had breakfast on the beach, sharing fish and bread, which is a beautiful and practical reminder of how Jesus revealed himself to his disciples after his death and resurrection. He was there among them, feeding them and caring for them as he always did. Again, I imagine the affection they shared as well as lively conversation. What a gift to have him in their midst.

Pope Francis comes to mind as I wonder about Jesus revealing himself after his resurrection. The day before his death, the Pope agreed to meet with a powerful politician who did not share his views. The man claimed to share the same religious tradition as the Pope, but his words and actions were in sharp contrast to those of the Pope.

Initially, this meeting bothered me. Why give this man a moment? Then I realized this is precisely what Jesus would have done. It was one of those “aha” moments. The light bulb went on in my head. Pope Francis revealed Jesus to me when he met with the politician.

I am a skeptic – a doubting Thomas – so I am grateful for Pope Francis's example. He modeled Jesus, which in turn offered me a model.

Sometimes it is easy to find Jesus, other times it is a true mystery. Where has Jesus revealed himself to you this Easter week? How could you be a model of Jesus for another?
